The oldest named train the SP, the Del Monte has passed Sand City and now passing Fort Ord. The daily Monterey to San Francisco train had long been an abandonment target of the SP but the coming of Amtrak on April 30th would spell the end of the train.

In the years after World War II Southern Pacific went from being the most bullish railroad on passenger service to one of its biggest detractors. It continually downgraded service until Amtrak took over what remained.
