Remarks & Notes
2x16Es steam out of the morning sun as they head a southbound freight from Kimberley to De Aar. The 16Es were built in 1935 by Henschel in Germany, they were a small class of only 6 machines. The locos had 72" drivers and poppet type valve gear. There is anecdotal evidence that some very high speed running was done with these engines, 90mph is often quoted, not bad form 3'6" gauge!
