Remarks & Notes
British Railways 40 071 is an English Electric Class 40, 2,000hp diesel-electric built between 1958 and 1962 for Eastern Region passenger and freight work. Built as No. D271, it was renumbered to 40 071 in 1974. These locos were the first 2,000 hp locos in the UK and the mainstay of passenger work for many years. 200 were built; 180 of them (including D271/40 071) were constructed by English Electric at Vulcan Foundry, and twenty were built by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns. (Ely, Suffolk, United Kingdom – August 1974). Douglas G. Walker photograph, Craig Walker collection
