Any British railway enthusiast fortunate enough to remember the era will recall images such as this at myriads of quiet railway stations dotted throughout the United Kingdom. Far from being a rarity, Victorian and Edwardian working environments on British Railways remained a reality until at least the end of the 70's and in some places more recently than that. This photograph was not 'posed', I simply stuck my head 'round the door and asked if it was OK to take a photo. "Yes" came the reply from the clerk who unconcernedly carried on working.
