Remarks & Notes |
In 1948, newly nationalised 'British Railways' ran a series of high profile trials exchanging premier locomotives between the four regions. Old rivalries and unfamiliarity with 'foreign' engines made this more of a publicity exercise than a serious intent to reallocate locomotives. On the 50th anniversary, a GWR 'King' returned to Leeds for an historic re-run on former LNER metals to London. Looking every inch a Monarch, 6024 'King Edward I' (dressed up as 6018 'King Henry VI') was prepared in the early dawn at that one-time 'cathedral of steam' - Leeds Holbeck Motive Power Depot. |
