Remarks & Notes |
The river Calder flows under the 23-arch (14 in view) Copley viaduct built by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway in 1857 to carry traffic from Halifax into Lancashire via the Calder valley. The other bridge in the foreground carries the lines connecting towns further down the valley such as Huddersfield and Wakefield. They will meet at Milner Royd Junction about a mile to the left. The neat buildings and the cricket field on the right are part of a 'model village' built in 1837 by the philanthropic owner of a huge local textile mill at Copley for his employees. |
