Remarks & Notes |
And now for something completely different. Many types of specialised freight were part of Britain's everyday railway scene since Victorian times. Some freight vans were specifically designed for the commodity being carried. This recreated scene shows seed potatoes being brought by tractor to a Scottish railhead, bagged and loaded into (in this case) a 12 ton 'Vanfit' wagon. They will likely be destined for Lincolnshire and East Anglia. Such traffic now chokes our roads, but will the continually rising oil price once again tip the balance in the favour of railways? |
