Remarks & Notes
Two DX General Electric diesels (2050 kW each, U26C model) from 1976 are towing Mainline Steam's charter train over the 56 m high Broken River viaduct on the ascent to Arthur's Pass. The fence behind the train serves as windbreaker and is common on many of New Zealand's viaducts.

Trains on 3' 6" (1.067m) track from Whangarei to Bluff with virtually heritage rebuilt EMD and GE locomotives still the mainstay power. The network was privatized in 1990's and operated by Toll until 2008 when state owned KiwiRail was established.
