Remarks & Notes
34067 Tangmere approaches Aldermaston with The Somerset Explorer railtour. Tangmere is a Southern Railway unrebuilt Bulleid Light Pacific which collectively have a nickname of Spam Cans due to the air smoothed bodywork design. Some were named after locations in the South West of England, others, such as this one, after people, places and machines associated with the Battle of Britain. Although the same design, they were known separately as West Country and Battle of Britain classes. Some of the more novel mechanical features such as the chain-driven valve gear tended to cause problems, and 60 out of the 110 locomotives were rebuilt by British Railways in the late 1950's as more conventional machines (both mechanically and visually). Both unrebuilt and rebuilt versions shared the same external appearance as the bigger Merchant Navy class (all of which were rebuilt).
