| A verdant patch of cultivated crops conspicuously contrasts with the natural brown color of the the eastern Washington "desert." Lying between the irrigated Columbia Basin Project lands and the famously-fertile Palouse region, this barren, arid scabland was where I found a short southbound manifest approaching Tunnel #17 on UP's Ayer Sub on an autumn afternoon as storm clouds ominously loomed in the distance. Cut into the basalt near the top of the butte is the abandoned SP&S 3rd Subdivision, a depressing reminder of one of the best-engineered rail lines I've explored. |
