Looking forward from an open Dutch door, the Winter Aurora plows its way north near Chase through a snow squall on the last day of the month. This is the ARR's regularly scheduled winter passenger service that makes a 12 hr journey to Fairbanks on Saturday and returns on Sunday. It is a true jack of all trades performing yeoman service. On this day it catered to tourists, locals, boy scouts enroute to a winter camp, and local accessing their remote cabins. Besides all the passengers the train also serves as "paperboy" as the conductor tosses the weekend edition of the Anchorage Daily news out to various homesteaders along the way who don't otherwise have access to the outside world.
