Remarks & Notes |
Due to a massive rock slide that buried the highway road access to the coastal town of Whittier on Prince William was cut off. The ARR came to the rescue by offering twice daily round trip passenger trains from Anchorage to Whittier to serve residents who were trapped. On this day the evening train can be seen returning to town with two coaches and an ex-F40 cab car leading. The Chugach Mountains rise beyond the skyline of Alaska's largest city. Note: the slide occurred on April 13th and as of today, May 4th the road is still closed. The ARR shuttle service changed a couple days after this photo to turns between Whittier and Portage with bus service to and from Anchorage. Note: photographed from public property. |
