Remarks & Notes |
NGG16 Class 2-6-2+2-6-2T number 143 approaches the second short tunnel in the Aberglaslyn Pass as the middle of the train passes through the first and the rear emerges from the longer 300 yard tunnel that allows the railway to enter the gorge from Nantmor. The tunnels and trackbed here were constructed in around 1906-8, but not used until 1922/3 when the Welsh Highland Railway was completed. The line was closed in 1937 and lifted in 1941. Nearly 30 years ago I walked the trackbed through the tunnels and never imagined that rails could possibly return after over 70 years |
