Remarks & Notes |
An old shot from 1979. The line from Rawtenstall to Castleton had been demoted from a busy line to a branch for delivering coal once a week. Here we see Class 40 no. 40 031 shunting the coal wagons at the site of Rawtenstall station. The line was later abandoned by British Rail and taken over by the East Lancashire Railway and is now operated as a heritage line using mainly steam trains. The station has since been rebuilt at Rawtenstall and is the northern terminus of the line. A piece of thirty year old modern history. |
