The 8700 crosses the chip truck crossing for the final time. I would trade the half-ton (to get back down to the plant) for the sticks to spot the 8700 out to CP. A sad site indeed.
This mill produced 180,000MT of NBSK/NBPP/NBHK per year. The woodpulp was sold throughout North America and Europe to numerous companies: Marathon Corp (whom the town was named after), James River, Proctor & Gamble, Kruger KTG, Bay West/Waseau Paper, Kruger Products, Provincial Papers, St Marys Papers, Cascades Inc, Terrace Bay Pulp, Tembec, Georga Pacific, Smurfit Stone, Kimberly Clarke, Cellular Tissue.
On an average month, we would handle around 500 cars. Carloads moved; pulp in boxcars, woodchips in woodchip cars, sodium chlorate in hoppers, and turpentine & tall oil in tank cars.
The 8700 was sold and repainted blue and now resides at a Fibrek mill in Saint-Félicien, PQ.
