In steam days, Magaliesburg station was an important watering point, as all trains faced long climbs out of the station in both directions - east to Krugersdorp, or west to Zeerust. The line was dieselised in 1971/72, but 37 years later the track alignment remains unchanged. These class 34's have their work cut out for them as they lift 36 loaded fuel tankers up the 1 in 40 grade right out of the station. One of the original water towers can be seen behind the train, still in reasonable condition, but no longer in use.
