Remarks & Notes |
Mirfield was a textiles town in an area of the West Riding of Yorkshire known locally as the 'Heavy Woollen' district. The huge size of these mills can be judged by the fine example that forms the backdrop to the station and yard. Mirfield station had a large overall roof but was architecturally nondescript. The yard was extensive to cater for the local textiles industry and the two locomotives illustrated spent most of the morning in the yard. However, these were the dying days of steam, Yorkshire's textile industry and 'pick-up' freight. Consequently all in this image has thus vanished. |
