Remarks & Notes |
One of the few bright moments during the day allowed a pleasing silhouette of 'The Great Marquess' on a charter freight. The three cylinder LNER 'K4' 2-6-0 is the only survivor of a class of just six locomotives. They were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London & North Eastern Railway, intended primarily for hauling modest loads on steeply-graded Scottish routes. She was built at Darlington in July 1938 and was finally withdrawn from traffic in December 1961. The 'Marquess' is now in her 71st year, having spent 48 of those years in preservation! |
