With the overhead power supply switched off between Irene and Pretoria, diesels were brought in to work the trains. A filthy class 34-200, one of the original batch imported from the USA in 1971, approaches Irene with a pair of 18E's and their train, a holiday extra from Hoedspruit to Johannesburg.
