Remarks & Notes |
For the past 20 or 30 minutes, the exhaust fans have been howling and red/white checkered door has been closed. A strobe over the door starts flashing and it's show time. The door slowly opens and the headlights from the Empire Builder illuminate the concrete lined bore. The glow highlights the ridges in the concrete, the long unused catenary supports and the odd icicle or two. The train has been in the 7.8 mile long tunnel for more than 20 minutes and climbed some 600' as it approaches the crest of the grade several hundred feet inside the portal. This image was made in safe location well outside the tunnel using a nice long lens. The inspiration and idea for this image is credited to Ross Fotheringham. Here's his interpretation of the theme! |
