This is one of my favorite Pennsy photos. PRR EMD E8a 5768 and an EMD E7A pause at Englewood Union Station in southeast Chicago, making a station stop. Englewood was a major junction between the Pennsylvania (PFtW&C), New York Central (LS&MS), Rock Island and Nickle Plate Road via trackage rights. It hosted a large passenger station at the western end. Englewood was protected by a large interlocking tower at MP 461.3 (from Pittsburgh, PA). Seen to the left of the train, it was a two-story frame structure constructed in 1893. It contained a large frame, an electromechanical interlocking machine and 100 working levers. The tower and interlocking was maintained by both the PRR and Rock Island, who supplied the operators. My maternal grandfather did not live very far from here.
