Remarks & Notes |
Looking more like a publicity photo, this is just another day in the life of the Alaska Railroad. The ARR's sole DMU proved herself well suited to the task for which she was purchased during her maiden season in 2009. Wearing the name "Chugach Explorer" she is buttressed by her namesake mountain range rising majestically beyond. The mountain glacier curling down the flanks of the high peaks certainly testify to the fact that this little pocket accommodation is aptly named! In the foreground are some of the ubiquitous "pickled trees" that dot the Portage Valley. They serve as stark reminders of nature's power as they were killed indirectly by the 1964 "Good Friday Earthquake." That temblor obliterated the small town of Portage and dropped the grown up to seven feet in places. While that event alone didn't kill the trees it put their root systems below the high tide mark and they gradually absorbed the salt water. While the salt killed them, it also served to preserve them for generations in a state of pseudo-petrification. |
