| CSXT's Springfield based local B740 has ducked out of the way on the interchange track and the crew has tied down their motors before they headed up into town for beans. Meanwhile southbound NECR train 603 is sneaking behind and is about to thump across the Boston Line diamond with an FEC (former UP) SD40-2 in the lead. Palmer isn't the hot spot that it once was back in the late '90s when fans from far and wide came to see Conrail's hot shot fleet of TV trains led by braces of GE C30-7As and heavy manifests with the pride of the fleet SD80MACs and NECR's spotless GP38s and then of course the eclectic Mass Central which featured an ARR F7 and a beautiful Alco C424. All that lament for the past aside, however, Palmer can still put on a decent show with three freight railroads and Amtrak providing enough variety to make it worth a visit. While I'll always miss those old days, I'll still return whenever I get the chance... |
