Remarks & Notes |
CSXT's Springfield based local B740 cruises east into town slamming across the NECR (ex CV) diamond and then diverging on to the controlled siding. The crew will work the small interchange yard to east dropping cars for the NECR and Mass Central and performing other local industry chores. In the background can be seen the fabulous Henry Hobson Richardson designed Palmer Union station which opened d its doors 1883. Today it has been stunningly restored and serves as the "Steaming Tender" restaurant which, despite the hokey name, is actually quite elegant inside. Note the strange pink trimmed building partially obscured by the large maple tree. This ornately trimmed Victorian structure house the offices of William N. Flynt Company which was the builder of Union Station. The odd little building is quite historic in its own right. To learn more about the history of Palmer's railroads I highly recommend the book One Town & Seven Railroads published by the Palmer Public Library.
