Fuel tenders were pretty popular for a few years as railroads were looking for ways to buy cheap fuel in fewer locations rather than pay many different suppliers, all of who had different prices. The fuel tender also eliminated fueling stops which saved time on train movements. It seemed to be a good idea, but then a number of tank cars converted to the service began to have issues after being subjected to the forces in the middle of lash ups. Most fuel tenders were then slowly phased out. |
