After making a pick up off the house track at Stockton, Union Pacific's St. John Local, now referred to by crews and dispatchers as the '46 local', heads east just before sundown with 7 cars for North Yard in Salt Lake City. The location is along UP's Lynndyl Sub at ABS 7583, between control point siding switches at East Erda and West Lake Point. In the distance are the shadowy Oquirrh Mountains and along the foothills, the urban sprawl of the growing city of Tooele. It was a wonderful surprise to catch an original UP SD40-2 leading the '46 local', built brand new by EMD for the UP in Feb. 1979. Not sure what became of 3530's original pilot mounted snow plow.
