Back in March of 1979, a group of Provo area railfans found out that a UP officers special was headed east from Las Vegas, Nevada. In order to catch this special move in the daylight, a carload of us drove several hundred miles west toward Milford, Utah to intercept the special train. Along the way we photographed as many UP freight trains as we could. In this Kodachrome 64 transparency, we catch a pair of DD35's on the point of a westbound coal load slowing to head into Black Rock siding to meet the officers special. Little did we know at the time, our mundane freight traffic images would become far more interesting and valuable to us than the shots of the E9 lead passenger special. Who knew?
