Remarks & Notes
This is the confluence of the Calder & Hebble Canal and the River Calder at Eastmoor, Wakefield. Canal boats can join the Calder at this point for about two miles and then re-join the canal system to continue westward towards Lancashire. The Class 66 is heading east across the fine stone bridge, built in the middle of the 19th Century by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway on their line connecting Manchester and Leeds. At a stroke, the arrival of the railway spelled the death knell for commercial canal traffic, these days only used for pleasure craft. The towpaths have become the favourite haunt of hikers, cyclists and (as here) dog-walkers!
