Remarks & Notes |
During the 1930 the class 23s with their outsized tenders (9500 gallons) worked this arrid line. They were succeeded in the 1950s by the ultimate SAR steam locomotive, the Class 25 Condensing locomotive. Steam was exhausted into the condensing tender, which was longer than the locomotive. The force of the steam drove three large fans which cooled and condensed the steam. This tripled the distance between water stops. During the 1991 Steam Festival the last working example of each class work a northbound train on the Kimberley-De Aar line.
