While the actual Western Pacific Railroad has been gone for nearly 27 yeaars, the spirit lives on in the form of SD70ACe #1983. Here the one of a kind painted EMD leads UP's North Platte to West Colton manifest along the former Los Angeles & Salt Lake Route at Lake Point, Utah. This 100 car drag, all 11,740 tons of it was losing considerable momentum as the train ascended Erda hill. The face of Kessler Peak of the Oquirrh Mountains is becoming shadowed as the sun drops toward the Great Salt Lake. The DPU motors are visible in this view as the train works it's way around a long graceful curve at milepost 760, measured west to east from Los Angeles, in the form of a true western railroad.
