Steamscape: Crown Point. The V&T's morning train from Mound House to Virginia City climbs a steady 2.2% grade as it winds and twists through the Comstock Region of Western Nevada. Along the way, it passes the remains of several abandoned industrial and mining sites, including the defunct Crown Point Mine that is just below the train in this photo. Just ahead of the train, the yellow sandy area is the former location of the Crown Point Trestle on the original V&T. Before the 1930s, this sandy area was a deep ravine, spanned by a spectacular, 500 ft long wooden trestle, but the ravine was filled in and the trestle eliminated just before the original V&T Virginia City Branch was removed in the late 30s. The passengers on the new V&T definitely get to experience a piece of Nevada history that seems somehow frozen in time.
