Remarks & Notes |
Kloof station on the “old main line” between Durban and Cato Ridge. Once upon a time this was electrified territory, with a daily commuter service operated by South African Railways EMU’s. There was also some freight traffic and occasional main line passenger and freight trains when the “new main line” was closed for one or other reason. Today, things are very different! The commuter service (Metrorail) now only runs from Durban as far as Pinetown. From Pinetown to Cato Ridge the line has been de-electrified. Umgeni Steam Railway (USR) operates steam-hauled trains between their base at Inchanga and Kloof on the last Sunday of every month. The station building is now a restaurant, the Stokers Arms, and the locomotive and coach on loan from USR. The goods wagon (once used for carrying dynamite) behind the coach is used by USR to store equipment used on their running days. Visit their website at http://www.umgenisteamrailway.co.za |
