Remarks & Notes |
Freshly repainted KiwiRail DCs 4513 and 4761 head an off-season TranzAlpine passenger back towards Christchurch, with a few hardy souls out on the open-air observation van platforms braving the late-winter airs.
The two A1A-A1A locos were high-nosed 567 powered DA class EMD export G12s when built in the early 1960s before being chop-nosed into DCs with 1650hp 645 prime movers in the early 1980s. The extensively rebuilt panorama-windowed carriages date from even more ancient times - being built in NZ in the 1940s. They are due to be replaced with fresh stock in the coming year.
This is an excellent train journey! |
