Remarks & Notes |
In another view looking back from the second unit of three on the head end of this loaded coal train you can see the train exiting the north portal of 310 ft Tunnel 1 and crossing Placer Creek. The train is on a 2% grade that will lessen briefly before climbing steeply at 3% and around multiples curves up to 14 degrees before cresting the 1062 ft summit at Grandview. All six SD70MACs (3 up front and 3 mid train DPUs) will be working hard to lift the 74 car 10,765 ton successfully over the top. This tunnel and bridge are the culmination of the ARR's own little "tunnel district" which is dramatically illustrated by this great shot on John Comb's fabulous web site dedicated to all things Alaska Railroad. Note: the photographer is a railroad employee with permission to ride and was wearing all required PPE while taking this photograph. |
