Remarks & Notes
There's no finer way to travel the rails! Bruce Lord is a lucky man, being the regular track inspector on one of the most spectacular and remote sections of railway line in New Zealand. He pilots his modified Suzuki 4wd over twin ribbons of steel that run across viaducts, through mountains and along cliffsides and gets a more relaxed view that even the Tranz Alpine passenger train offers. Albeit without wine and Devonshire scones at your seat. Here Bruce pauses at the west end of tunnel 3, which is perched on the edge of a hill and gives me enough time to put the camera down on a stone and run back for a quick self-timer portrait. The rails are three feet six apart in NZ and the 1890s tunnel profiles dictate the shape of the modern coal cars that ply this route today. Thanks to Evan Batchelor, Bruce Lord and the Southern region of Ontrack for arranging this great experience.
