Remarks & Notes
A dusting of snow on distant Beamsley Beacon adds to the beauty and tranquility of the wonderful Yorkshire Dales. This calm is briefly disturbed by the thunderous passing of 'Darfield No.1' hauling an early season 'Santa Special'. The locomotive is a 1953-built 0-6-0 Saddle Tank built in Leeds, West Yorkshire by the Hunslet Engine Company (Works No.3783) for the N.E. Division of the National Coal Board, serving her time in the South Yorkshire coalfield at Darfield Main Colliery near Wombwell, Barnsley. Mercifully, the locomotive is free of the almost obligatory and unnecessary smokebox adornments usually found on these occasions.
