Remarks & Notes |
An eastbound grain empty winds it's way through the scenic Umtanum Ridge Water Gap on a rather warm late summer afternoon. Designated the first scenic byway in Washington State, the Yakima River Canyon cuts a beautiful (up to) 2000 ft. deep recreational oasis between the rather harsh and desolate Umtanum and Manastash Ridges of Miocene epoch basalt flows. No, that's not a tiny highway suspension bridge. The foot bridge provides access for one of the many river recreational pursuits along the Yakima River. Chief among these is spectacular (and lightly patroned) fly-fishing, particularly for large wild rainbow trout. Umtanum is is a great place to spend a summer's day and maybe you just might see a train. The ridge to the left provides trail access to some spectacular high canyon views; just bring plenty of water. Scanned From Transparency: Kodak KM 25 |
