RF&P GP35 No. 133 leads southbound intermodal train No. 175 across Quantico Creek Bridge at Quantico, VA on January 30, 1988. Work was almost complete on RF&P's new single track bridge built to replace the aging double track structure to the right. RF&P had initially planned for a new double track structure, however by this time CSX was calling many of the shots at the RF&P and the idea was nixed. In hindsight, RF&P had been correct. The single track bridge quickly became a choke point on the busy RF&P and the problem would be compounded in several years with the start up of VRE commuter service. To correct the problem, a new double track structure has been constructed roughly on the alignment of the original bridge. Now there are two bridges across the creek, with one track occupying each bridge. Eventually, when the CSX RF&P Subdivision is triple tracked, the second track will be laid on the newest bridge.
