Running about a half-hour late, San Luis Obispo-bound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #775 departs the station in Fullerton, California, on a rainy December 21, 2010. (This was the fifth of six consecutive days of nearly non-stop rain in southern California.) On the middle-main sits BNSF Railway train S-LHACLO1-21A, waiting for a clear signal after being held so that the passenger train could cross in front of him. The crew on the freight used this break to dodge the raindrops and scurry to the cafe in the station (in the lower right) for some warm coffee while they wait for their clear signal indication.
Stretching from San Luis Obispo to San Diego, the Surf Line has become Amtrak's second busiest route. See the Pacific Surfliner and San Diegan in action along with trains from predecessors Santa Fe and Southern Pacific.
