Ballast Ghost As a CSX MoW train drops new ballast along CSX's Georgia Subdvision, the man behind the action emerges from the dust produced by the fresh ballast. This is a very neat operation to watch and see. The MoW worker in the photo is seen holding a remote which controls the opening/closing of drop doors on each ballast car. He walks along side the train (which is moving a walking pace) watching out for crossing, defect detectors, etc. that cannot be covered by ballast and controlling the flow of ballast coming out of each drop door. And Yes, the only straight SD40 left on CSX's roster, 4617, was really leading this train!
