Remarks & Notes |
This was my first time on the Olympic Peninsula and was largely a non-railfanning trip. But one does diverge when the opportunity arises, and I took a few minutes to explore the remnants of a the once vast railroading empire in the Grays Harbor area. Today the logging lines are but a memory and the Class 1s have retrenched but a bit remains... I found the splendidly restored ex-NP depot at Hoquaim and then worked my way east on Hwy 12 on our way to Tacoma. The yard in Aberdeen yielded little of note and soon the tracks peeled away into the woods and I thought that was it. Much to my delight, however, east of town near Aberdeen Junction the tracks came back alongside the highway and this train was tied down. A brief stop yielded a few shots of a home road GP38M (originally a GP40 of B&O heritage dating from 1969) with a CORP unit trailing framed by the pretty but invasive purple foxgloves. |
