Remarks & Notes |
A pair of ARR geeps trundle slowly up the yard lead and across C Street on a winter afternoon in Alaska's largest city. They are leading a rare dedicated high-wide special train into town for delivery to the Northstar Terminal for unloading. The two massive loads are riding on heavy duty KRL flat cars with a spacer between them. They moved from Houston in special train service on the UP where they were then loaded on to the ARR's barge at Seattle for a long float up the inside passage and across the Gulf of Alaska. Upon arrival in Whittier they were again forwarded by the dedicated train you see here. Once spotted to the dock they were unloaded by crane and then trucked down the Kenai Peninsula for ultimate delivery to the Tesoro refinery in Nikiski. It was a remarkable logistics effort pulled of seamlessly and successfully by all involved. |
