Remarks & Notes |
It is a spectacular clear and bright early fall day in the Last Frontier and the birch trees are have already turned but the early snow has melted off the peaks of the Chugach Mountains. This shot was taken on the rarely used Ft. Richardson army trackage about three rail miles north of the Anchorage yard as a yard job makes its way slowly back to the main with 5 loaded gons. A winding lead off the ARR mainline reaches back to a large classification yard and miles of disused Army trackage. This year the ARR secured a contract to ship contaminated dirt from the base to the lower 48 for disposal. Over 20 gondolas were loaded here on the lead providing a brief spike in activity on this normally dormant trackage. Note: the photographer is a railroad employee with permission to be on the property and was wearing all required PPE while taking this photograph. |
