Remarks & Notes |
Steam's days are now numbered. Languishing in the late summer's evening light, unwanted and un-needed, even modern classes like the BR 'Standard 9F' freight locomotives await their fate. They will not work again but wait for the cutter's torch on the 'dead' roads of the few remaining operating steam depots such as Royston. Why should a locomotive allocated to a Merseyside depot (Birkenhead) be found in Royston? Because the steel smelting plants in Sheffield were only 20 miles away and 92048 was in a scrap merchant's queue. Behind her is ex-LMS '8F' 2-8-0 No.48160 awaiting the same fate.
