Remarks & Notes |
The 16-mile Swinton and Knottingley Joint Railway was completed in May 1879 giving the Midland and Great Central Railways a more direct route to access York from the Sheffield area. It connected with the North Eastern Railway at Ferrybridge, near Knottingley. The sole (and seldom-photographed) viaduct on the route spans the River Went at Low Ackworth . This morning, Great Western Railway interloper 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' breezed by with the coast-bound 'Scarborough Flyer'. The poppies and dog-daisies scattered amongst the crops made a lovely sight to set the scene.
