Stourton (pronounced STIR-ton) is an eastern suburb of Leeds. The city once boasted no less than five steam locomotive depots at Holbeck, Neville Hill, Copley Hill, Farnley Junction and a 'freight only' depot here at Stourton. It was just a few hundred yards behind the photographer but it was rarely photographed as all the other depots offered more exciting fare! Now it is the home of a container depot and frequently sees rail-hauled freight departures. Much more to my taste though, is the sight of a steam-hauled express charging out of a major city as once was an everyday occurrence. Stirring stuff!
