This is the location where many a locomotive has begun to lose adhesion, a sharp curve on a 1 in 39 incline. Not so this gallant old freight locomotive, her sure-footed thump could be heard long before she emerged into the sun and long after she had passed. She is the only survivor of over 500 of the LNWR 'G' class built from 1906 to 1922 (and much rebuilt in the 30s) into G1, G2 and G2a variants. All however, somewhat misleadingly, are known to enthusiasts as 'Super Ds'. The last survivors soldiered on until the end of 1964.
