Remarks & Notes |
FEC 905 trundles down the Wilbur Wright lead once upon a time this was the FEC Mainline. The original FEC route in this part of Florida was a patchwork of railroads that Henry Flagler connected together in the late 1800's. The original course was a Jax - St. Augustine - Palatka - Bunnell route before heading to points south. In 1926 the Moultrie cut off was build cutting about 20 miles from the route with a direct St. Augustine to Bunnell run. Over the years that became the mainline and in 1989 this branch to East Palatka was abandoned. However in the late 1990's the FEC reactivated the line with the addition of industry near I-95 a few miles west of the city. On this day the train gods smiled, this is a very tough and tight place to shoot and only works in the late afternoon in the winter months the timing of that and the train (which can appear anytime from mid morning to darkness) must be right. Today it was. |
