Remarks & Notes |
Drifting downgrade through Devils Canyon between Kahlotus and Farrington a loaded Burlington Northern grain train is utilizing the beautifully engineered former Spokane Portland & Seattle right of way between Spokane and Pasco. BN would cease using this line as a through route in 1988 in favor of upgrading the parallel former Northern Pacific line to the northwest after installing Centralized Traffic Control and adding several sidings to accommodate directional traffic. After the BN merger in 1970 and at varying times and durations, BN would use the former NP line to host traffic in one direction between Pasco and Spokane and would use the former SP&S line to host traffic in the opposite direction. In mid 1988 that came to an end as all traffic was routed via the former NP line through Ritzville. |
