Remarks & Notes |
This picture has been taken from the top of the Isteiner Klotz. The Isteiner Klotz near the village of Istein is a distinctive, 80-metre-high rock face in the otherwise gentle hilly landscape. Castles and fortifications were continually built here thanks to its proximity to the French border; the last time was during World War II. The German troups were regularly sending bombs over the Rhine to France from this elevated position. The fortifications were demolished after the war. Today, the Isteiner Klotz is a nature reserve because of the rare plant varieties found there. |
